Halls of Undermountain

Halls of Undermountain, the newest adventure supplement for Dungeons & Dragons, was released last week and I had three pieces in the book. In addition to this release there was an accompanying article in Dungeon magazine last week, Trobriand's Machinations, that expanded on the threats of Undermountain and I had one piece in there as well. Bring on the monsters...

I had a ton of fun with all of these and wish I could have taken on more since the local and situations offered up so many fun possibilities. I have a special place in my art heart for D&D so I relish anytime I get to work on a D&D project. Being able to design new monsters for the D&D universe is just an added bonus. Though I have contributed to both Dungeon and Dragon magazines in the past few years it has been three years since I got to contribute to a bound D&D book, so these pieces were of special significance to me. Thanks goes out to Kate Irwin for getting me involved in all of this monster fill fun and for offering up great direction!

  1. One can tell you enjoyed these—each one is brimming with personality.

Snake Curse is absolutely disgusting. Well done!

  2. Great work Chris! The lighting on the Darktentacles is excellent, and yeah... the Snake Curse is really gross (I mean that in the best way, of course :). Your digital technique is getting so good that they're almost indistinguishable from actual pigment.

  3. Chris your pieces look killer :) Did you get to choose the ones you worked on or were you just given random ones? I'm with Craig, the snake curse is awesomely gross in the best ways indeed! I'd say the Scaladars piece is my favorite of the bunch though, those colors are really resonating with me. Really great stuff man, I'm glad you got to share them with us.

  5. Thanks everybody! Really appreciated!

@Craig: I am not really sure how I have come to this end with my work feeling traditional when I have only recently actually been trying my hand at traditional media, but I take it as the highest compliment!

@Eric: the 3 for the Halls of Undermountain book were assigned to me, but the Scaladars I got to choose. I could only take on 3 piece for that issue of Dungeon and my AD gave me my choice of the 4 pieces suited for me. It has been interesting to see how the 2 piece I did not take turned out at the hands of other artists.
