Sahrvin Demon drawing time lapse test

A friend and fellow artist of mine recent produced a time lapse video of himself drawing. I was instantly captivated and wanted to produce my own. Over the weekend I did a test to see just how complicated it will be and what limitation my equipment will create. I was really pleased to discover it will be fairly easy! This is how that first test turned out...

I hope to do more of these once I am done preparing for and going to Gen Con. It has been really interesting to be able to objectively review how I draw and it has shown me a thing or two about how I approach an image.

  2. That's a really interesting idea, and it's great fun to watch.

    What equipment did you use?

  3. I just used my iPhone and did put modified it with iMovie. Never used iMovie and within minutes it was coming together. It was really quick and straight forward. The only issue is that the 21 minutes of video ended up to be about 4 gigs of memory. I cleared my phone in preparation, but in the future when I do more I will most likely do record in 30 minutes blocks and then move it over to the computer.

As far as set up, I tried several combinations of stands and rigs... but ended up just clamping my phone to a cardboard box and clamping the box to my table. Very low tech... might try something that allows me a little more room and have a higher view next time.

  4. ...I should mention that it was 21 minutes of drawing and I sped it up 850% to make the video. If anyone was wondering...

  7. Awesome, Chris !!! I've got a couple tests of similar stuff for class, ala FengTzu screen capture vids, but I can't show them.. (if I don't end up teaching the set of classes I'm pitching come Fall, I will =)

Got a question though :: I'm Using ScreenRecord2 (inexpensive screen record) with iMovie on the Mac, and HyperCam along w Windows Movie Maker when on the PC.. What does your phone record in, file type .mov?, and what settings do you use for compression on iMovie? You're getting really good resolution with that Vid!! =)

Anymore, I think students will either expect a quality traditional alla prima session in 30min. or less, (Difficult at best, for me anyway, 30min is when they start to drift off) or one or two of these tutorial vids..

Don't want to be a bother if you're on deadline,
but file type and form of compression on either
of those progs would be very apriciated.. =)
    Namaste',

    1. Thanks, Chuck! Glad you enjoyed it, I am anxious to do more. My iPhone creates a .mov file. I think the file for a 21 minute recording was pushing 4 gigs of memory. As far as iMovie goes, I never used it before and was learning it as I made this first test and I just went with all default settings and what naught. The final file was about 75 mb on final render. I would have to see if I kept the files that made this... since it was only a test I was not really planning on devoting the memory needed to archive it. I will be a lot more mindful on my next videos and will share what I do with greater detail. I hope this helps, if I come across any additional into I will post it.

  8. Gracious thanks, Chris..Yeah, every bit helps.. =) 75mb.. that makes sense in why it's as clean as it is whole screen..(hard to do, and awesome that this was the first go.. =) Whole screen capture would be even bigger, but I'm finding the .mov file made with a PC, won't play between new (lion) Mac and old (tiger) Mac.. Sounds like this year will force me into the new software.. =( Well, change is good I suppose.. =)
    Thanks again,
    Chuck
