Mage Wars cards

Hey everyone, sorry for the long absence.  Among other things, i had my appendix out in february.  exciting stuff!  the surgeon even gave me a photo of my angry appendix from the surgery.  i wanted to do a quick cthulhoid painting of it, but didn't have the time.  i had finals to turn in not long after my surgery, so i was struggling to get recovered enough that i could get back to painting.  in fact, below are the paintings i was working on!

These are for Mage Wars, a card-driven board game that's coming out soon.  Our own Craig J Spearing did lots of the foundation work, creating the look and feel of the game, so i was lucky enough to have a stack of his images on hand to draw inspiration from.  His mage designs, and action scenes for the game are great.

Without further ado, here are the pieces (click for full image, and for extra detail views of some)

  1. Good stuff, Raven. Love the Medusa but there is a snake in the way of an important detail. :)

    1. oh, come on-- one of her wrists is only partially covered, and her other one is *completely* exposed! what else do you want?

or was that not what you were referring to?

  2. I really like the medusa, and the vampire gal's pose is great. I have a hard time getting flow in head to toe straight-on standing poses, but you nailed it (her feet are beautifully planted). I also like how you don't shy away from using an outline occasionally. Excellent work Raven!

    1. heh, leave it to fellow illustrators to give a compliment like "her feet are beautifully planted". :) seriously, though, those kinds of compliments are the best. not that i don't appreciate "omg, that's totally freakin' sweet, dude!" compliments that i get from fans (or illustrators).

but *i* appreciate that fellow technicians of the craft appreciate stuff when i get it right-- regardless of how much or little that thing is the focus or purpose of the illustration.

    2. The Gorgon Archer is totally freakin' sweet dude! (Oh, and I also like the subtle variation in human skin tone transitioning to reptile texture, and how well her tail section is planted :).
