I still go back and forth between starting with a line drawing and starting straight into value / color painting in PS. Different for different projects, but my preference is to go straight to paint. There's just something more organic about that process for some reason. Thanks for posting this, man!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08486162169728894693noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6008289199623214061.post-52816555139063001922011-10-06T08:03:27.869-07:002011-10-06T08:03:27.869-07:00Thanks guys! I was concerned about the second version looking forced, but the open space in the background is giving the composition a more airy feel.Craig J Spearinghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12954799496549002683noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6008289199623214061.post-57533089730428297412011-10-05T21:00:55.200-07:002011-10-05T21:00:55.200-07:00Great process Craig. I'll occasionally begin with a contour, though it usually leads to the image being really tight and micro detailed. Rough ground work helps to prevent me from rendering eyelashes and engraved buttons (well... most of the time anyway :).Craig J Spearinghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12954799496549002683noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6008289199623214061.post-54752832079476296522011-10-05T16:22:09.106-07:002011-10-05T16:22:09.106-07:00I love looking at other artists' process. Seeing other ways of approaching finishing up a piece from sketch to finish always inspires me- I like shifting things up time to time.

Plus this is a great piece! The dragon is really nicely done.Anna Christensonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01054062234983824738noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6008289199623214061.post-9458633200121747942011-10-05T14:18:27.344-07:002011-10-05T14:18:27.344-07:00Wow, Great work on the scales. I'm also planning to extend the image on the top and right side to make room for text (then submitting it to Kobold Quarterly as a cover idea).

Looking forward to seeing your new painting!Craig J Spearinghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12954799496549002683noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6008289199623214061.post-88369344378909470102011-10-04T22:34:48.116-07:002011-10-04T22:34:48.116-07:00Hell yeah! And it's so funny you say this started as only a sketch and turned into a full finish. The same thing happened to me yesterday with a piece meant only to be a warm up. I'll have the painting done shortly, I'm anxious to share it with you all. (Thanks for showing that progress, too! so damn cool)Eric Braddockhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00357831950779008573noreply@blogger.com
